The Side Table

This is one of those places in the estate where you'll find odds and ends, things that are waiting for their own pages, and suchlike.

It's also the place for certain comforts of civilization, in particular wee draps and drams that can only be made with peat, grain, time, love, luck, and the blessings of the gods. That's right, Scotch Whisky.

Apropos of which, a few reviews for you to ponder:

Bowmore Legend Islay, 15-year-old (single malt)
750 ml; $34.69 retail

This is without a doubt the most interesting scotch I've ever tasted--and I do confess to having tasted a few in my time. Every book one reads about scotch points out that it's made with peat. Well, one sip of the Bowmore and you'll know it's true. You can taste the peat, much more strongly than any scotch I've sipped.

The foregoing is not a complaint! Bowmore has a distinctive flavor that's most pleasant, particularly if, like me, you don't care for sweetish distilled spirits (which should explain why I don't drink bourbon, and we won't even talk about . . . ~shudder~ . . . Southern Comfort).

I haven't settled on a rating system for whiskies yet, principally because I don't drink them that often. But when I figure out how to rate them, be assured this little prize will rate highly, indeed. With or without a number, I recommend it gladly.
The Macallan's 15-year-old (single malt)
750 ml; $49.18 retail

Some say The Macallan's is the scotch whisky. Some don't. I say it's stupendous.

Many people are incredulous when one describes a distilled spirit as "smooth," but The Macallan's really is. There is no fire in this fire-water, at least not in terms of its initial effect on one. Instead, it's a liquid proof of the idea of the strong fist in the velvet glove, a soothing, gentle taste with a stalwart character deep within.

If there's a negative aspect to The Macallan's, it's the price. The Macallan's is not cheap, and if you want an even older sampling, you definitely will pay for the privilege. Price is the main reason I don't drink more scotch (hmm, that made it sound like I'd like to drink all the time; not what I intended; figure it out for yourselves ~G~). So, I'm nursing the bottle that a dear friend gave me at Christmas very, very carefully. But if you want a special sipping, consider this single malt, even in its younger forms. It's well worth the occasional penny or more.
